When you schedule a session with Melissa Demple Photography, know that your needs come first. The first time we meet for our pre-session consultation, we will talk about your goals, what to expect during your session, how to prepare for your session, and the portrait products and packages we offer. We spend this time to learn about you, your family and your expectations so that we can create the perfect custom portrait experience you desire.
Maternity portraiture sessions typically last about 1 ½ to 2 hours depending on clothing changes and/or lighting adjustments but can, at times, go a little longer. Please try not to schedule anything within an hour or two after your session so that you can relax, enjoy the experience and not feel rushed.
It is generally best to do a maternity session when you are about 7 ½ months pregnant, when the belly is round and full, but you are not too uncomfortably close to term. All pregnancies (and bellies) vary, however, so we will work with you to determine the best date to schedule your session between the 28th and 32nd week of your pregnancy. If you are having twins or triplets, please let us know. We may want to do the session even earlier!
The rule of thumb for maternity sessions is to keep clothing and makeup simple and comfortable. Neutral or solid colors, limited patterns, simple jewelry or even a special piece of jewelry you would like to showcase. We encourage you to bring 2 to 3 changes of clothing such as jeans (yes, the ones you wore before your pregnancy), oversized men’s buttoned down shirts, scarves, simple skirts, shrugs, shawls, cardigans or even a maternity dress you really love. Basically, anything that makes you feel and look good.
If other family members will be photographed with you during your session, consider choosing color groups. Choose mid to dark tone colors as base colors and try to avoid matching outfits. Again, simple is always better.
Newborns are best photographed within their first 2 weeks of life when we can capture that sweet sleeping and curled up look. After 2 weeks, babies do not curl up as much and may not be able to sleep as easily. For these reasons, make sure to call and book your newborn session well BEFORE your baby’s planned birth to ensure we can schedule your session within the 2 week timeframe after the birth. Of course, we know you may not be able to perfectly time your little one’s arrival so we set aside several dates around your due date and ask that you call us as soon as possible after the birth to solidify your session date.
Newborns are best photographed in the buff; of course, we take every precaution to ensure they are warm and cozy and to keep their privates, well… private. While we have many props in the studio, if you have a special blanket, booties, hats or other items which are special to you, please bring these with you and we can incorporate them into the session. Keep in mind that newborn sessions tend to last about 2 ½ to 3 hours to provide ample time for feeding, changing and soothing.
